2019 Volvo XC90 T8 Offers Exceptional Power and Efficiency

The Volvo XC90 has been turning heads in the auto industry for a few years now. The three-row SUV offers striking styling and impressively luxurious interior amenities. But that's not all that sets it apart.

Critics and owners have both applauded the XC90's diverse powertrain lineup. The midsize luxury SUV has three powerplants, each one providing a unique driving experience. While all are praiseworthy, one has stood out as particularly impressive: the T8 Plug-In Hybrid.

Some drivers jump to conclusions about plug-in hybrid systems, decrying them for abandoning power and fun in favor of sheer efficiency. This is far from the case with the XC90 T8. This plug-in hybrid is both the most powerful and most efficient option for Volvo's flagship SUV.

Strong performance comes largely from the gasoline portion of the powerplant. The T8 drivetrain uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine that produces 313 horsepower. That's a good start for any SUV. Add in the electric motor and you get an additional 87 horsepower to work with. That brings total combined power output to 400 horsepower.

That impressive power doesn't come at the expense of efficiency, however. The system can engage electric-only mode and drive with zero emissions. Working together, the gas engine and electric motor can yield up to 62 mpg highway.

We have XC90 models of all powertrains here at Suburban Volvo Cars, include the XC90 T8. Stop by to take one for a test drive -- our staff will be ready to hand you the keys.
